Is your board safe when traveling?
As you excitedly pack for your long awaited surf trip you suddenly freeze with a weird look on your face. You remember last time you we’re at the airport & how you saw the airport staff throwing luggage around like bocce balls. The decision comes do you really want to take your brand new custom made board & run the risk of damage or do you hope you can rent a board at your destination.
You can’t determine that one airline handles luggage better than another it purely comes down to the individual staff who handle it. Knowing what you’ve experienced this doesn’t give you must confidence. Even though you can’t guaranty no damage you can help your chances. Unscrew your fins & using small pieces of foam tape them on the tail & nose. Next use bubble wrap & wrap a couple of times around the entire board. Place in a surf travel board bag, put your name & address on the bag & your right to go. Surf boards are classified as sports equipment & some airlines have good rates while others sting you a pretty penny even up to $200US/ per board. So before you book your air ticket check the terms & conditions of surfboards, that may make or break your holiday.
Tim’s Tip: You can use your clothes as more protection in your board bag.
See you in the water!
